A wonderful feel-good movie that puts the OUT in the outback! Three somewhat jaded drag artists decide for various reasons to make a trip from Sydney to Alice Springs – over land in an old and unreliable bus that (after an essential paintjob) comes to be known as Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. During the journey, the trio share their life stories and meet a lot of interesting people – some friendly, some tolerant, some violent. It’s a life-changing experience for everyone, but in a good way.

Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp do a fine job in drag, the script is sharp, the laugh-out-loud moments are many, the soundtrack is fun and, of course, the costumes are gorgeous. In fact, it was the costume design that won the film its Oscar at the 1995 Academy Awards.

As queer cinema goes, it’s pretty mainstream, but it’s a classic, nonetheless.
