The Philadelphia Story (1940), directed by George Cukor, is a sparkling romantic comedy that remains a classic of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The film stars Katharine Hepburn as Tracy Lord, a wealthy and spirited socialite whose upcoming wedding is complicated by the arrival of her ex-husband (Cary Grant) and a charming tabloid reporter (James Stewart). Tracy, initially portrayed as proud and emotionally distant, is forced to confront her own imperfections and re-evaluate her relationships. The story balances humour with insight, capturing the tensions between public image and private identity.

The Philadelphia Story was both a critical and commercial success, and it played a key role in revitalising Hepburn’s career after a string of flops. The film is celebrated for its witty dialogue and the charismatic performances of its three leads, particularly Stewart, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor.

George Cukor was known for his refined storytelling and his ability to draw out nuanced performances, especially from female leads. Often called a ‘woman's director’, Cukor worked closely with many of Hollywood's most iconic actresses, including Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, and Audrey Hepburn. His other notable films include Little Women (1933), Camille (1936), and Gaslight (1944), which was screened by The Eclectic Cinema in June last year.
