Set in the wintry world of the 1961 Greenwich Village folk scene, this film, from Joel and Ethan Coen, follows a week in the life of Llewyn Davis, a struggling musician played with weary intensity by Oscar Isaac. Llewyn is talented, but it’s a difficult time for him - he’s lost his musical partner, alienated most of his friends, and is running out of places to crash. This is the portrait of a gifted artist teetering on the edge of irrelevance.

The Coen Brothers are known for their distinct storytelling style, combining sharp dialogue, offbeat humour, and richly drawn characters. Their films often deal with questions of fate, absurdity, and human limitation: Inside Llewyn Davis stands as a contemplative variation on these themes.

The film emphasises music as both a source of authenticity and a commodity. Its carefully curated soundtrack, produced by T Bone Burnett, evokes a period of musical transition, just before the cultural upheaval heralded by artists like Bob Dylan.

Visually subdued and tonally restrained, the film resists conventional narrative closure. Instead, it presents the reality many artists face: that talent doesn’t always lead to success, and meaning is often elusive. Subtle, atmospheric, and deeply human, it’s one of the Coens’ most quietly affecting films.
