For all those Elio fans out there, this is for you! Elio, of course, is played by Timothée Chalamet, and his character is the 17-year-old son of an archaeology professor, played by Michael Stuhlbarg. It’s the summer vacation in Lombardy, and things start to get more interesting following the arrival of Oliver (played by Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old graduate, who will spend several weeks with the family, working as an assistant to Elio’s father. A strong attraction develops between Oliver and Elio, who is still finding his feet in the world of sex and romance. Adding in the Italian sunshine and the beautiful countryside, all the ingredients are there for an unforgettable summer.

Based on a book by André Aciman, the screenplay was written by James Ivory, who was honoured with an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. For the director, Luca Guadagnino, the film brought international acclaim – it was a great critical and commercial success. Success has continued since with Guadagnino having two film-releases in 2024: Challengers (starring Josh O’Connor) and Queer (starring Daniel Craig).

And Timothée? Well, he’d done some stuff before this film – much of it for TV – so his role as Elio certainly turbo-charged his nascent stardom, leading to major roles in films such as Dune, Little Women, Wonka and, most recently, A Complete Unknown.

It’s time to see Elio and Oliver again on the big screen!
